Women and children are generally the most vulnerable people in society. In Northern Nigeria they are often relegated to the background, exposed to domestic violence, forced into early marriages and deprived of their rights to education, personal liberty and human dignity. The Center for Human Rights Justice and Peace has carried out workshops and enlightenment campaigns against child/forced marriages, discussed its negative effects on child brides and the society at large. This has helped and prevented some parents from forcing their children into marriages against their will and before the attainment of adulthood.
It also intervenes in cases of forced marriages and where necessary, takes legal actions against parents that force their children to marry and those that force their children to marry before maturity. It also enlightens abusive spouses on the position of the law on domestic violence.
Women Empowerment Programme
The Center for Human Rights Justice and Peace trains and empowers women in beat making, knitting, tie and dye, production of liquid soaps, disinfectants, catering etc. This training has empowered many women and given them a source of livelihood. This has equally increased their self esteem and made them more responsible to their families. With support from Swiss Hand Foundation, Switzerland, the Center also gives out small loans to women to enable them trade and earn money to support their homes and improve
